Art Explosion: Catching Up

Hey Folks -

So I've fallen off the blog wagon and let a lot of things go...unblogged. I've been under the weather for a few weeks now with some annoying and persistent stomach issues, and it's sort of blotted out everything else from my focus.

Anyhoo, it's probably about time I show some recent pieces. Just finished this one up for a show this Friday -

Friday, July 1st, Rockets Robots & Ray Guns! The Toothless Cat/Jinxed Gallery, Piazza at Schmidt’s, 2nd and Germantown Ave. Philadelphia 19123 (Northern Liberties section). 6 - 10PM! Be there or be square. Below is my art for the show, "Space Girl" - 12" x 18" archival print. It's framed and looks pretty snazzy I gotta say.

Here's some art I created for the ASOP show, Shell Shock! A Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Art Show & Exhibit. It didn't end up making it to the actual show, I got caught up with timing and traveling (it's tough living outside the city and trying to get art to and from shows) and really regret not being able to participate. I wanted to showcase Master Splinter, in all his wise glory.

The Age of Reptiles

Hi everyone!

I am very excited to invite you to the premier of The Age of Reptiles - an Autumn Society show held at Paradigm Gallery in Philly! It's going to be an amazing display of dinosaur-themed artwork, from some of my favorite Autumn Society artists. So, with that said, be there - 6 PM, Friday the 25th, 2020 South St. Philly PA! I chose to illustrate the Oviraptor, a dinosaur named "Egg Thief" after being discovered near a clutch of eggs. Later it was revealed the Oviraptor was nesting with it's young! These beasts had feathers and a beak. Right up my ally, as I'm sort of crazy for birds. Here's a sneak peak of the 16" x 20" acrylic painting:

My holiday work for WOWindow™ Posters

Happy holidays out there to everyone. I always get pretty gushy this time of year - I'm so thankful for my life and the people in it. Thanks for reading this blog.

I thought I'd take some time to post about what I do at my in-house job. I work at WOWindows, LLC., where we make WOWindow™ Posters. These are really innovative decorations (right now for Halloween and Christmas, but we're planning to branch out to other occasions as well) that hang up in your window, and 'light up' using transmitted light from your household lamps. At night a beautiful illustration illuminates in your window for your neighbors to see. It's a pretty great effect, and a lot of time and care goes into making the art that is portrayed.

Aside from designing packaging and marketing materials for WOWindows, I also do some art direction and a great deal of file preparation. I get to work with some incredibly talented artists and make their work come to life in use. Printing on our plastic material is very tricky - we work hard to get the best, most brilliant coverage on our posters, making them opaque where they should be and letting them glow where its best.

I also get the occasional opportunity to illustrate the posters themselves. This is a great thrill for me, and by far one of the best things about my job. Here are a few of the holiday posters I created this year:

Four Year Strong: Holiday Admat

I had the great pleasure of illustrating and designing the holiday admat for band, Four Year Strong. They were great to work for - had a very clear vision of what they wanted (makes my job easier!). We looked at a lot of images from The Polar Express, and ended up deciding on this train motif.

I've also got a limited color edition in the works for some silk screened posters down the line. I'll post pictures when I know it's OK to release. Frankly I'm not sure which version I even like better! It's always agonizing to scale down your color scheme, but I feel like once you do, you end up with a super concentrated version that can, at times, speak even louder. We'll see.

This is my entry for the Autumn Society of Philadelphia's upcoming show with Ground Kontrol, "8 Bit Calavera." My cartridge as well as 39 others from the ASOP will be installed on a wall at Ground Kontrol in Portland, OR to form an 8-bit style skull shape (see below) in honor of Día de los Muertos. If you're on the OR area, or will be on the 5th, check out the show premier for me!

Tea Brain

Last week I finished up an illustration for The Indypendent newspaper. It was a real pleasure getting to do work for the cover, as well as partner up with art director Frank Reynoso and editor Arun Gupta (thanks guys!).

The edition was released today, so I wanted to share the final illustration in its layout here. Hope no one reading this is a big fan of Sarah Palin (sorry guys, if so!).

These are some concept sketches I bounced back to Frank and Arun, before we settled on featuring Sarah Palin. I'd originally thought of including the "Don't Tread on Me" flag the Tea Party has adopted as their slogan. In the end we all felt this complicated the image - a cover's got to be straightforward and clear. I still like these though, they might have worked for spots.

I've got lots of fun things in the works right now. The Autumn Society of Philadelphia is contributing to yet another video-game themed exhibit. This time I'll be painting on an old NES cartridge in the theme of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)! Should be great, so many great colors and who doesn't love drawing skulls? I'll update with more information later.

The holidays are on their way and I'm working on some awesome Christmas-themed band advertising. Oh how time is flying . . .

Frankenstein Strikes Again!

Here's the final illustration and design I ended up with for the Cranford High School Senior Project: Happy Hauntings. It was a lot of fun, and I got to go really old school with this one! I'm a little anxious about the CMYK printing of this, since I went all Saved by the Bell in the color scheme, but here's hoping it comes out slick like it looks on-screen:

VIDEO GAME GORE: 2nd Piece

I've just finished putting together the 2nd piece for my contribution for VIDEO GAME GORE. This show opens next Friday, Oct. 1st, from 6-8 at Brave New Worlds in Philly. Be there or be square. Really this is going to be a good one - all horror-video game-themed art at a comic shop.

I wanted to feature the works of mad artist, Sander Cohen, from the first Bioshock game. He liked to kill people and wrap them up in plaster. He also had a pretty big splicer fan following, and they all wore plaster masks.

This as well as my first piece will be available for purchase at the show. Stay tuned for more fun stuff. In the mean time, here's a quick photo of a fun project I've taken on for the Cranford NJ High School senior project: "Frankenstein Strikes Again!"

My Youth, My Rose

Bioshock was sort of an instant inspiration for me when I was invited to participate in this show. The game itself (in my opinion) is just about perfect. It's full of amazing and gruesome/beautiful imagery. This particular piece was inspired directly by a scene where a female splicer's shadow is seen, as she's bent over a baby carriage weeping. You must destroy the splicer, and once doing so, you discover the baby carriage empty aside from a revolver. Another female splicer in the game screams, "My youth, my rose, I want them back!" before throwing herself at you for the kill. Needless to say, I really loved the twisted female characters in the game.

This is a 9" x 12" mixed media compilation (and boy does Blogger just suck the color out of it . . . ). It will be available to purchase as an archival quality print.

I'll be exhibiting in the upcoming Autumn Society of Philadelphia show, VIDEO GAME GORE, this October 1st at Brave New Worlds in Philly. Yes, it's a comic shop. Yes, it's an art show. And yeah, it's a show about awesome horror video games. Do you have an excuse not to be there? Heck no!
